10 EASY Member Benefit Makeover Ideas & Tips

1. Tie your offerings to career advancement and/or organizational efficiency. Tip: The more you can find out about your members' purpose or "why," the more you can address their needs with pertinent solutions, fostering lifetime belonging.

2. Ensure your job board is either only accessible to members or offer a steep discount for them to search and/or post opportunities. Tip: If your job board is open to everyone, consider sending a job alert email to only members to make the offering more exclusive.

3. Send communications to members only - if a benefit is exclusive - then only members should be able to access it. Tip: Send your most widely opened email (ex. Advocacy Alert) to non-members periodically with a callout to what they've been missing.

4. Have an online forum or distribution group? Publish the top posts or conversations in various communications to build awareness and engagement. Tip: In addition to publishing the top posts, celebrate your superusers by crediting the post to them, asking them for a testimonial to help garner engagment, and/or consider asking them to flesh out the topic in article or an education offering.

5. Send pulse checks often to gauge member satisfaction and encourage suggestions for improvement. Tip: This is especially important for the first year of membership with quick pulse checks ideally happening at the 3, 6, 9 and 12-month mark of membership.

6. Offer your empty offices or buildings for use by your members as more positions switch to remote. Tip: Have a simple sign-up sheet via google docs and offer space free to members.

7. Position yourself as a subject matter expert to your membership by conducting relevant research, issuing polls, and/or publishing white papers of interest. Tip: Use polling mechanism, potentially through your online forum, to ask quick questions. Report out findings and leverage any relevant programming and/or resources your organization offers about the topic.

8. Celebrate milestones for your members and your organization. Tip: For milestones like birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, etc. consider adding a ribbon to a member's badge, include an ad in the magazine, post on social media channels, and/or send a personal thank you note or email.

9. Showcase the ROI by putting a dollar amount on the savings that comes with membership, exclusive offerings, and partnering discounts. Ex. Through the exclusive discounts from a variety of leading companies, NAHB members saved an estimated total of $37 million in 2022.

10. Highlight exclusive benefits often and via various channels (emails, social media, magazine, email footers, etc.) Tip: Although, it may seem redundant, not all members digest content the same. So, it pays to be repetitive and varied when promoting your organizations' offerings.
